The Menno News

From the Editor

I owe some of you an apology for delaying the last issue, especially those of you who have been waiting for the "Consumer Report: Horseshoe Scrapers" article. Everyone on the Menno News staff had to pitch in and help Ernie Weins cut down a few apple trees.

Welcome to all the new subscribers!

It is wonderful to have your business! Let me tell you about our outfit: The Menno News or "Newsdeutch" was started in 1854 by John A Thiessen. The language chosen for the paper was an innovative combination of Low and High German, rightfully named "Medium German". It was initially a paper-based publication, serving the communities surrounding the town of Deutchland. Editor Thiessen pushed the limits of the press, running into controversy by publishing risque photographs of his aunt's bare ankles.

The once small paper grew by leaps and bounds after being purchased by a secretive Italian farmer named D. Corleone. Shortly after the takeover, Corleone became the next editor of the Menno News following the unexplained death of Thiessen.

The 1920's were a very profitable decade for the paper as it increased circulation to overseas colonies in Paraguay and Mexico and branched out into making pickling jars. It was only then that the Menno News first discovered America. Following the acquisition of a several casinos in Nevada, editor Corleone was arrested on numerous fraud charges. With the loss of the editor came the onset of the Great Depression.

By 1936, The Menno News empire was no more.

A few years ago, while searching for some zweibach in my Oma's basement, I came across some long forgotten issues of the paper. At the time, I had my hands full with my last project, "Time". Finally my schedule cleared up and I took advantage of the situation.

We are breaking new ground here at the Menno News. The internet offers many amazing possibilities for us. We need new material, and we need readers. We realize that the world seems to be getting busier, and there just doesn't seem to be any time for life's pleasures. Instead of watching your favourite TV program tonight, try something creative. Do something for your community. Do something for yourself.

Make the Menno News one of your pleasures.

Thank you.

Editor Jamieson Graham
